Hypoparathyroidism

Hypoparathyroidism is the state of decreased secretion or activity of parathyroid hormone (PTH).

Hypoparathyroidism is a rare condition in which the parathyroid does not produce an adequate amount of parathyroid hormone. This condition is a result of a combination of symptoms, but most commonly occurs due to the removal or damage of the parathyroid glands. When the hormone’s secretion or activity is low, this leads to decreased blood levels of calcium (hypocalcemia), and the increasing levels of blood phosphorus. There are two types of hypoparathyroidism: deficient parathyroid hormone secretion and an inability of the kidneys and bones to respond to PTH.

Complications
If diagnosed early, complications may include cramp-like spasms, malformed teeth, irregular heartbeat, or paresthesia. These complications are reversible; however, if not diagnosed early, irreversible damage may include cataracts, calcium deposits in the brain, stunted growth and slow mental development in children.

Management
Treatment-wise, regardless of the cause, patients will need to take Vitamin D and calcium supplements. Calcium supplements must be taken several times per day along with a high dose of Vitamin D once per day.
