Women, take back control of your health with these 5 helpful tips! Your body will thank you.

Don’t Neglect Your Mental Health:

There’s so much more to keeping your body healthy than just the physical aspect, like your mind. Research shows that every year, 1 in 5 women in the United States struggle from mental health issues – such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), eating disorders, and more. Unfortunately, a lack of awareness and available resources keep women from pursuing help surrounding mental health. So, what can you do? Try to take more time to unwind and do something you enjoy, connect with people you trust to talk about how you’re feeling – like a friend, therapist, or psychiatrist, and schedule an appointment with one of our providers so we can provide the appropriate care, education, and treatment necessary.

Protect Your Heart:

Though the average life expectancy of US adult women has increased over the last decade, now 82 years of age, heart disease is still the number 1 leading cause of death in women in the United States. Unfortunately, certain risk factors can prematurely age our hearts – such as diabetes, obesity, smoking, or lack of movement – therefore causing heart disease. The good news is that many of these conditions can be prevented with the proper health care.

Move Your Body:

Getting and staying active is vital not only for maintaining a healthy weight but for your overall well-being. Moving your body regularly lowers your risk for many health conditions, like heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. Thanks to the advancement in technology these days, you can start moving your body in the comfort of your own home and for free with online videos – which is the perfect scenario for those staying put due to COVID-19. Start with a goal of 90 minutes a week until you can work up to 150 minutes a week. Just 30 minutes a day will put you in a good place to taking back your health!

Eat a Well-Balanced Diet:

It’s no surprise that our diet and the things we eat on a daily basis have a massive impact on our health. From processed sugar and high-sodium intake to alcohol consumption and highly saturated foods – it’s no wonder women feel overly exhausted with little energy to get through the day. We get it though. There never seems to be enough hours in the day and running through the Chick-Fil-A drive-through may be just the thing that gets you through the day…with an extra side of caffeine. But nutrition is essential for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and believe it or not, there are healthy eating habits you can create so can have a well-balanced diet. For those always on the go, pack a bag with some healthy snacks and meals – like a cup of fruit, string cheese, and a turkey sandwich with whole wheat bread. It’s important your diet includes a colorful variety of foods at every meal, with whole grains, fat-free and low-fat dairy products, and lean meats. Just following these few tips can make a big difference in your health! And if you need additional guidance, our Registered Dietitian is here to help!
